Our Help Comes from…

Our Help

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2)

These words penned by an unknown psalmist speak first of the uncertainty of our help, then the assured reality of where our help is found – God, the maker of heaven and earth.

Why “Maker of Heaven and Earth”?

Have you ever thought about why the psalmist chose “maker of heaven and earth” as a way to describe God here? How does the reality that God made heaven and earth reinforce our hope in him as the one who gives us help?

I think Proverbs 3:19-20 can help us. Solomon writes the words, “The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; by his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew.” So, in making the heaven and the earth, God demonstrated his wisdom, understanding, and knowledge.

But we can’t forget that God is also holy, meaning, he’s above and beyond anything we could ever think or imagine. That means his wisdom is holy wisdom, his understanding is holy understanding, and his knowledge is holy knowledge. In other words, even if you grouped the brains of the world’s smartest people together, they couldn’t even attain a smidgeon of understanding that God has. I love how one ancient Christian leader, Paul, puts it: “For the foolishness of God is wiser than men…” (1 Corinthian 1:25)

Let’s also read Jeremiah 32:17. The young prophet writes, “Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.” So, not only did God make the heavens and the earth by holy wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, but also a holy power. And according to Jeremiah, God is immune to difficulty. Nothing can stop God.

This kind of power is unthinkable and unfathomable among humans – like we said, it’s holy. It’s a power that can speak galaxies into existence and can delicately orchestrate the digestive system of an ant.

Our Help Comes from the Internet

Consider with me the vast amount of knowledge and wisdom and power in one of the world’s most prized creations: the internet. If you take the internet with all its greatness, and you size it next to God and all his greatness, it’s like flicking a piece of dust into the Milky Way. Actually, scratch that. It’s like dividing that piece of dust into a million pieces and taking one piece and flicking it into the endless universe.

This is unimaginable, unattainable, and unheard-of power.

So, why did the psalmist describe the God of our help as the maker of heaven and earth? Because nothing else works better. What comfort to know that the God where our help is from has a holy wisdom, understanding, knowledge and power to help us with. Nothing is too hard – no trial, pain, suffering, persecution, abuse, suffering, etc. – for the God where our help is from.
